Hyena Facts

Hyenas are often misunderstood as scavengers, but they are actually skilled hunters that take down large prey such as wildebeest, zebras, and even young hippos. They are also incredibly social animals, living in clans of up to 80 individuals. Hyenas are easily recognizable by their distinctive appearance, with large heads, powerful jaws, and sloping backs. They also have a unique vocalization that sounds like laughter, which they use to communicate with each other and mark their territory.

Because of habitat loss and widespread hunting, Hyena are classified as near-threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the body that sets the conservation status of species. Spotted hyenas are locally extinct throughout much of South Africa, as well as West and Central Africa. Persecuted by farmers and poachers, their numbers seem to be declining outside of protected areas.
